Summer brings longer and sunnier days, ideal for enjoying a good round of golf. However, it also poses a challenge for course maintenance, as the high temperatures and intense sunlight can affect the health of the turf. Therefore, today we invite you to learn about some processes  of  the maintenance of the golf course in summer.

WATERING

Watering is crucial in summer, especially when evaporation is high and the soil dries out quickly. It is important to water deeply and preferably early in the morning or in the evening, to ensure that water reaches the roots. Automated irrigation systems with moisture sensors can optimise moisture use. And in case you are thinking that this is a waste, we would like to let you know that on our Font Del Llop course we use recycled water from purified water treatment plants, reducing the demand for fresh water and favouring the fauna and flora.

SIEGA

Mowing is essential to keep the golf course turf in optimal conditions and to be able to differentiate the different areas of the course (fairways, greens, tees…).

During this season, the grass grows faster due to the higher temperatures and the greater exposure to the sun. Frequent and accurate mowing not only maintains a uniform and attractive appearance, but also promotes healthy growth by stimulating roots and reducing the risk of disease. Adjusting the mowing height slightly higher can provide shade to the soil, conserving moisture and reducing turf stress.

TREATMENTS

Turf needs nutrients to withstand heat stress. Applying treatments such as slow-release fertilisers with a proper balance of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium will help strengthen roots and improve turfgrass resilience. Avoid over-fertilisation, as it can burn the turf and increase the need for irrigation.

Also, aerification, or aeration, can improve air circulation and reduce soil compaction, decreasing the risk of fungal diseases or other pests.

MAINTENANCE BY AREA

The maintenance of the field requires special attention to each of its areas, especially in the summer season. Bunkers should be raked regularly to maintain an even surface free of debris. On the greens, accurate mowing, aerification and irrigation control are essential for a dense and uniform turf. Holes should be checked and changed regularly to prevent wear and ensure consistent playability. Fairways need regular mowing, turf height adjustments and proper watering. With meticulous maintenance in each area, a high quality golf experience can be guaranteed during the hot summer months.

With all this, golf enthusiasts, our restaurant guests and homeowners can enjoy a perfectly manicured environment all year round.
