What is a bunker?
Bunkers, or sand traps, are a challenging part of the game of golf. At Font del Llop golf course we have a total of 89 plus 1 on the driving range. When a golf ball lands in a bunker, players are faced with the task of getting it out of there and into a more favourable position for their next shot. Getting out of a bunker requires a special technique and a strategic approach. In this blog post, we’ll explore some key tips to help you overcome this tricky situation. From selecting the right club to hitting the sand the right way, you’ll learn the fundamentals needed to successfully get out of a bunker and improve your overall game.
Here are 5 tips for getting out of a bunker in golf:
1. Select the right stick
Choose the appropriate club for the distance and height of the bunker. Generally, it is recommended to use a wedge, such as a sand wedge or lob wedge. These clubs have more loft and help elevate the ball quickly.
2. Position and alignment
Position your feet slightly wider than your shoulders and align your feet and shoulders to the left of the target (for right-handed golfers). This will allow you to make a downward swing and hit the sand before the ball.
3. Take a smooth swing
Avoid swinging too aggressively. Instead, concentrate on making a smooth, steady swing. Keep a good rhythm and avoid tensing your arms and hands.
4. Hit the sand behind the ball
Instead of trying to hit the ball directly, aim to hit the sand behind the ball. Imagine you are trying to throw a handful of sand out of the bunker. This will allow the sand to propel the ball up and forward.
5. Follow the swing all the way through
After hitting the sand, follow the swing all the way through. This will ensure clean contact and good follow through. Don’t lift your head before you make the full swing.
The most important tip is: Hit the sand behind the ball. Concentrating on hitting the sand behind the ball is essential for the sand to drive the ball up and forward, allowing a successful exit from the bunker. Remember that the main objective is to get the ball out of the bunker and not to hit the ball directly.
