The PGA Tour announces rule changes for 2026 season that seek to modernise the competition, make it more competitive and adapt the professional game to the new demands of players and fans. From modifications to key course rules to adjustments to the ranking system and field sizes, these developments will mark a new era in professional golf. We’ll tell you all about them.

ADJUSTMENT TO THE ‘PREFERRED LIES’ RULE OR BEST PLACE’

One of the most talked-about changes is the modification of the controversial ‘Preferred Lies’ rule. Previously, players could lift, clean and place the ball up to one club length in wet or muddy conditions. From 2026 onwards, this distance will be limited to the size of a scorecard, reducing the advantage that placing the ball further away could offer and providing greater competitive fairness under these conditions.

REDUCTION IN THE NUMBER OF FULL MEMBERS

Another significant decision is the change in the eligibility system for full membership. Until now, the top 125 players in the FedExCup retained full Tour status for the following season; from 2026, only the top 100 will retain that status. This may translate into tighter competition to retain the card and gives greater competitive weight to each point in the rankings.

CHANGES TO THE SIZE OF TOURNAMENT FIELDS

In line with the reduction in full-status players, the maximum sizes of tournament fields have also been adjusted. Most events will go from a maximum of 156 players to 144, with some tournaments having even lower limits due to logistical or natural light issues. This may influence the dynamics of competition and the strategy with which players approach the start of the season.

NEW RULES FOR RELIEF AND OBSTRUCTIONS IN THE FIELD

The package of changes includes other technical adjustments:

Relief for immovable obstructions extended to include more items near the green, such as microphones or areas damaged by the removal of objects.

Replacement of damaged clubs allowed with similar clubs without penalty, provided the damage is not due to abuse.

The changes introduced by the PGA Tour for 2026 reflect a commitment to greater fairness, strategy and dynamism in professional golf. From tighter rules in difficult course conditions to a more competitive tournament structure, these adjustments will set trends and be the subject of analysis throughout the season.
